Omdia’s “Location Platform Index: Mapping and Navigation” provides a detailed analysis of major vendors in the location and mapping industry. This year’s update names four platform leaders and four disruptive players that can challenge them. The report indicates the strategies and capabilities of each vendor while presenting emerging mapping and navigation trends.
The “Leaders” group consists of HERE Technologies, Google, MapBox and TomTom. Each of the top vendors receives a detailed evaluation in the form of a SWOT matrix that helps to identify the company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The report also mentions developments and highlights that influenced the rank of each leader.
The “Challengers” group includes Apple, Microsoft, Esri and Comtech Location Technologies (CLT). Each of the companies receives an overall score for reach and completeness, while a full analysis is given to the top two challengers.
When assessing the vendors, the Location Platform Index takes two main components into account: completeness of the platform and its market reach.
“Completeness” reflects a platform’s core data, mapping functions, value-added services and monetization strategy. The “reach” parameter represents the number of users and ecosystems the platform serves.
The Location Platform Index allows vendors to make informed business decisions, but it also serves as a great source of knowledge to their customers. For example, a better understanding of location technology can help supply chain companies find solutions that boost their efficiency and end-to-end visibility.
